Fish & Richardson Receives Top “Band 1” National Rankings for Intellectual Property and ITC Practices in Chambers USA 2017

Fish & Richardson has received top “Band 1” national rankings for its Intellectual Property (IP) practice and its International Trade Commission (ITC) patent litigation practice in the 2017 edition of Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. Fish also received a top “Band 1” ranking for its regional IP practice in Texas. In addition, 11 Fish attorneys were selected as leaders in their practice areas, including senior principal DJ Healey, who received a “Band 1” ranking in Intellectual Property.

According to Chambers, Fish’s Texas team is known as a “leading patent litigation outfit representing some of the country’s biggest technology names, including significant recent activity handling software patent disputes before district courts and the USPTO.” The team is “also noted for its strength in contentious and noncontentious matters arising from the life sciences industry.”

A “tremendously well-respected firm,” Fish is “certainly a top player in the IP space,” due to its “great people and top-quality work product.” Interviewees also point to the “top-notch service” the firm provides, highlighting its “excellent depth of resources and intelligent strategies.” One source particularly appreciates the way that “they seem aware that the client has different priorities, motivations and perspectives than the firm has.”

DJ Healy is described as “super-smart” and “one of the very best patent litigators in the U.S.,” according to interviewees. With her longstanding experience in trial and appellate proceedings involving patents, clients describe her as “a walking encyclopedia who everyone listens to.”

The Chambers research team conducted in-depth interviews with thousands of clients and lawyers across the country. An elite “Band 1” ranking means that Fish and its attorneys stood out for their practice strength, legal knowledge and experience, ability, effectiveness, quality of recent work, and client service.

Fish’s global IP practice provides strategic counseling, litigation, and prosecution for clients ranging from start-ups to multinational corporations to world-renowned academic and research institutions. Fish’s world-class ITC team includes 21 principals who have led hundreds of ITC patent cases, many of which have helped define IP law at the ITC and beyond. In 2016, Fish handled 11 ITC cases, which represents 20% of all active cases at this forum, making Fish the busiest national firm practicing at the ITC.

Chambers is considered to be the most reputable legal directory in the world because inclusion is based solely on the findings of its research team. The rankings data is culled from in-depth interviews with clients and lawyers across the country. Ranking criteria include technical legal ability, professional conduct, client service, commercial astuteness, diligence, commitment, and other qualities most valued by the client. Law firms and individual lawyers are ranked in bands from 1-6, with 1 being the best.
