Exxon Mobil is involved in the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas, the manufacture of petroleum products, and transportation and sale of crude oil, natural gas, and petroleum products. The company will report its fourth quarter earnings on Tuesday, January 31, 2012.

Expectations: The consensus estimate for the company's earnings is $2 per share, up 8.1% from a year ago when ExxonMobil reported earnings of $1.85 per share. The consensus estimate has fallen over the past three months, down from $2.08. Analysts are expecting earnings of $8.45 per share for the fiscal year. Revenue is expected to surpass the year-earlier total of $103.46 billion by 15.9%, finishing at $119.88 billion for the quarter. The company is projected to report revenue of $482.86 billion for the fiscal year.

Performance: The company has reported revenue increases in the double digits for the past four quarters. Revenue has grown by an average of 26.8% with the biggest jump in the second quarter when revenue increased 35.8% year-over-year. The company's net income has been growing for three straight quarters. The 40.5% year-over-year growth in net income in the most recent quarter came after the 41.3% profit growth in the second quarter and the 69% rise in the first quarter. The stock price has increased from $81 on October 28, 2011 to $87.22 over the past quarter. The stock saw one of its worst stretches when its price fell $4 per share between November 18, 2011 and November 25, 2011.

Ratings: Analysts are split on the stock, but seven of 16 analysts rate it as a hold. Analysts have become increasingly pessimistic about the stock, as the number of buy ratings has dropped slightly over the last three months.
