AUSTIN -- Civitas Learning, Inc.,a startup combining the efforts of educator Charles Thornburgh and investor Adam Dell, completed an equity offering $3.05 million.
Thornburgh, founder and CEO of Civitas Learning, is also the founder of ClickSafety.com, an online safety training program. He was previously an executive for 14 years at Kaplan, Inc., where he helped pioneer online education. At the beginning of his career he founded Testtakers.com, which he describes as an "Education technology startup that developed first rich-media, diagnostic and prescriptive online SAT prep tutoring application. Acquired by Achieva.com/Kaplan Test Prep in 2001."
Dell, the brother of Michael Dell, is Venture Partner at Austin Ventures. Prior to joining Austin Ventures, he was a partner with Impact Venture Partners and Crosspoint Venture Partners. Earlier, he worked as a corporate attorney in Austin, Texas, with the law firm of Winstead, Sechrest & Minick. His investments include: Buzzsaw (ADSK), Hotjobs (YHOO) and Connectify (KANA). He also founded and served as chairman of the board of MessageOne, which was acquired by Dell, Inc. in 2008. He serves on the board of XO Communications, BagBorrowOrSteal and Open Table, and teaches at the Columbia Business School and the University of Texas School of Law.
Thornburgh and Dell have not disclosed details about the mission and scope of Civitas, whose name can refer to citizenry or citizenship.
